Their World

Famous comedian and family man, Brian Regan, once did a sketch where he suggested that sometimes parents don't try hard enough to understand what their kids are going through. He uses the example of a six year old who accidentally lets go of his helium balloon. The parents impatiently ask why he's crying. "It's a balloon! We'll get you another one."

He asks, "What would happen if you pulled out your wallet and it started floating away?"

Instead of wishing our children could operate at the same level of brain function as our adult brains, what if we tried to relate to them? How would that change things?

To us, a lost game, a back seat or a broken toy may seem like just a balloon floating away. But to them, in that moment, that balloon is their world.
