Creating Conditions

Control. It’s something we crave. We believe that if we could control the circumstances and even the people around us, we could be happy. If we had enough money. If we had the perfect companion. If our children would listen to us right away.

What can we control? Our bodies. Our actions. Our minds. That is where our control begins and ends. We can’t control our circumstances or the people around us. But, we can create conditions for change.

It’s like planting a seed. If you love the seed, you want to help it grow. You give it fertile ground. You carefully water it. You expose it to sunlight. You create conditions in which it can flourish. There’s a good chance that seed will grow. But, there is always a chance it will not. It may grow rapidly, accepting all of the help you’ve provided, it may grow slowly, taking its time. Or, it may not grow at all. But, you can find peace in the fact that you created conditions and your love for the seed doesn’t have to change based on its outcome.
